United Wardrobe launches program for brands to sell unsold stock

Published
Dec 6, 2018

Dutch fashion marketplace United Wardrobe has launched a new service, allowing fashion brands to exclusively sell unsold stock on the platform. Dutch label G-Star Raw is amongst the first group of brands to use the service. Previously, the marketplace was only open to sales of second-hand clothes by individuals.

United Wardrobe said that the service is designed to prevent that clothing remains unused at the shelves of distribution centers and that it “fits the brand’s philosophy” to give clothing a new life.

Via United Wardrobe, members are able to offer used clothing, footwear and accessories by creating a virtual closet. At the moment, the start-up has about 3 million active members offering used clothing for sale.

In 2017, the Utrecht-based start-up received a €1 million investment from Dutch fund Peak Capital. With the funding, the company focused on the expansion of its reach by targeting new markets across Europe.

United Wardrobe was founded in 2014 by three students: Thijs Verheul, Thijs Slijkhuis and Sjuul Berden. The fashion marketplace has grown into the largest clothing marketplace in the Netherlands and Belgium in recent years and is available online and via an app. At the moment, 90% of women in the Netherlands aged between 16 and 24 use the United Wardrobe app. The Utrecht-based start-up aims to make second-hand clothing the norm, while encouraging social networking and sustainability.

The G-Star Raw collection will be available on United Wardrobe from 6 December.
