Sculptor Janne Kyttanen launches fully customizable 3D-printed glasses line

Digital sculptor Janne Kyttanen has designed a line of glasses and created a platform for consumers to fully customize their eyewear pieces at home before they are 3D printed.

Three base styles of frames were used to build out the 3D files. Wayfarer, rectangular, and round silhouettes are the core styles that can then be customized. Consumers can add personalized text and colors to the frames. Both sunglasses and prescription lenses can be customized and printed.

"The 3D community is always looking for new projects," says Janne Kyttanen, digital sculptor and 3D artist. Kyttanen pointed out that many of the designers in the 3D community wear glasses, so "this is a great opportunity for creating and printing something both useful and artistic."

Janne Kyttanen is a Finnish multidisciplinary sculptor best known for his 3D design work. He founded 3D printing and design firm Freedom of Creation in 2000, which was ultimately acquired by 3D systems, a South Carolina-based manufacturer of 3D printers.

Past projects include co-creating the first 3D-printed textile that was shown at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and creating 3D-printed shoes. His work has shown at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Design Miami and also at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) among platforms.

The new 3D-printed customizable glasses collection is available through direct-to-consumer optics retailer, GlassesUSA.com. Customers can download the files that are optimized for 3D printing and customize their frames. Lenses are ordered separately.
