Nicola Kilner back at Deciem

Published
Jul 4, 2018

On Tuesday, Brandon Truaxe, the founder of beauty company Deciem, took to Instagram to announce that longtime co-CEO Nicola Kilner has returned to the North American skincare company.

A selfie of Truaxe and Kilner posted on Deciem's Instagram on July 3, 2018 - Instagram: Deciem

Truaxe posted on Tuesday a selfie with Kilner with the caption: “Our co-worker is back—but never behind. We love you, @nicolalkilner. You’ll always be our only —and always stronger than any can ever hope to be or become.”

Back in February, the company announced that it had fired Kilner. Truaxe said that Kilner was terminated as a result of an alleged conflict with another employee. She had been with the company for 5 years.

Chief financial officer, Stephen Kaplan, would also resign that same week.

Truaxe has been personally managing the company’s Instagram account since February, in an effort to increase brand transparency. However, his Instagram posts have often landed the company in hot water including messy public firings and questionable photos. One such example was a photo of a dead sheep, which was used to announce that the company will never test on animals.

Deciem makes the popular The Ordinary line of skincare, as well as nine other beauty lines. It was founded in 2013 in Toronto, Canada. In January 2017, Estée Lauder acquired a stake in the Canadian cosmetics group.

Despite the company drama, Truaxe estimates 2018 sales will be double or even triple 2017, and Deciem is on track for expansion in the U.S.
