As part of its international Upcycling Project, luxury accessories specialist MCM has launched a collaboration with five forward-looking UK artists.

It marks the brand’s 45th anniversary with each of the artists creating unique pieces based on the concept of identity, culture and the upcycling process using the classic cognac Visetos Stark backpack.

The company is displaying the pieces at its London flagship store in the West End and they’ll later be sold at an auction to raise funds to support the creative arts.

The artists include London-based set designer Imogen Frost whose inspiration comes from nature and texture; Denzel Currie (aka Curriegoat), a multidisciplinary artist and content creator who works with rug making, painting, leather craft and bookbinding with an overlay of mythology and surrealism; conceptual artist Joe Sweeney whose work is both morbid and humorous and is expressed through sculpture, print and installations; Jess Cochrane who merges paint with photography; and Ted Le Swer who mixes the moving image with sculptural processes using computer-generated imagery.

The company kicked oft the project by also working with five creatives from Germany and Austria. They redesigned bag silhouettes and reinterpreted them with the limited edition of 25 pieces available from last month at its stores in Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Vienna.
