John Lewis tests click & collect in Co-op stores

Published

Delivery options for goods ordered online are increasingly bringing physical shops into the equation with click & collect options hugely popular for consumers and John Lewis is aiming to drive this further. The department stores retailer is trialling a new option with The Co-operative shops.

The relatively small pilot phase will launch next week in five Co-op branches in London, Manchester and Nottingham. Co-op employees at a further Manchester shop have already had access to the service.

John Lewis has been a leader in moving into online sales among UK department stores and its thriving online ops represent a larger slice of total sales than many of its peers.

With the company having radically boosted its focus on fashion in recent years and click & collect being a key delivery option for fashion shoppers, this could prove a major boost to fashion sales.

John Lewis’s head of customer fulfilment operations, Eva Cullen, said the option will roll out to more locations if the trial is a success, also adding that click & collect is growing in popularity every year.

And the Co-op's director of innovation and format, Mark Pettigrew, said time-pressed shoppers are seeking “ease, convenience and choice”.

John Lewis already offers click & collect at its own department stores and its own Waitrose supermarkets but the broad spread of the Co-op across the UK offers more flexibility for its customers.
