Gucci issues statement in support of women’s reproductive rights

Gucci is the latest fashion brand to show its support for women’s reproductive rights.

Following fears surrounding the overturning of Roe v Wade, including a woman’s right to seek an abortion, the Italian fashion house has made a clear statement that it will continue to support women and their right to abortion via its Chime for Change initiative — a longstanding global gender equality campaign.

“When Gucci founded the global Chime for Change campaign in 2013, the company committed to use its voice and resources in the global fight for gender equality. As we now face a critical moment in U.S. history, Gucci remains steadfast in its belief that access to reproductive health care is a fundamental human right,” Gucci said in a statement.

“The company will now provide travel reimbursement to any U.S. employee who needs access to health care not available in their home state. Through the Chime for Change campaign, Gucci will also continue to support partner organizations that enable access to reproductive health and protect human rights, especially for the most vulnerable.”

Earlier this month, Gucci announced the latest round of grants and a growing commitment for Chime for Change in 2022.

In particular, since its founding in 2013, the campaign has raised more than $19 million to support projects and advocacy in 89 countries, globally benefitting more than 630,000 girls and women and reaching more than 3 million family and community members.

Gucci is following in the footsteps of Amazon, which also announced last week that it will pay up to $4,000 in travel expenses annually for non-life threatening medical treatments including abortions, for its U.S. employees.

Other brands to speak out in support of reproductive rights, include Levi Strauss & Co, Mejuri and Unilever, to name a few.

The U.S. Supreme Court is due to rule by the end of June.
