Fashion and luxury arrive in force in Miami for the art and design fairs

After Milan's Design Week and the Venice Art Biennale, it's Florida's turn to attract fashion and luxury. On the occasion of Art Basel Miami Beach, the largest art event in the United States, whose 20th edition takes place from December 1 to 3, and the partner fair Design Miami, which is held just across the street until December 5, brands and houses are participating in these events or hosting their own such as parties, cocktails, installations, special projects, store openings and business.

Intercontinental travel has picked up in force and Miami is the destination of the moment. More particularly, the trendy Design District full of galleries and chic boutiques, where the main fashion players have taken up residence. Like Balenciaga, which has just opened a boutique, or Giorgio Armani, with its Love project, combining fashion, with a limited edition collection, and art, through four giant blue animal sculptures created by the Italian artist Marcantonio, scattered in key locations of the district.

Another attraction is Bottega Veneta's participation in Design Miami for the first time with the Come Stai? project, which includes an exhibition, a conference and a book. The theme? The 400 sculptural resin chairs created by architect and artist Gaetano Pesce (a selection of which will be on sale), which served as the backdrop for Matthieu Blazy's last fashion show in Milan in September and are on display in Miami.

Dolce & Gabbana is also making its debut at Design Miami with an exhibition of its Alta Gioielleria jewelry collection, showcasing the talent of Italian goldsmiths through works of art. At the same time, the Italian label is taking over the boutique of Luxury Living Group, its partner for its Casa home line, to present its furniture collection in a 2,700 square-meter space in the heart of the Design District.

Fendi is not to be outdone, opening its first Fendi Casa flagship store in the U.S district and participating in the Design Miami fair, which it has been attending since 2008, with the Triclinium installation designed by Viennese artist Lukas Gschwandtner, who has created sculptures from canvas and cushions.

Taking advantage of Art Basel Miami's visibility, some brands choose to participate by hosting their own projects. Like the traveling exhibition called Family presented at L'Innovation Gallery by the Parisian house Ami d'Alexandre Mattiussi, organized in partnership with the Magnum Photos agency, unveiled in Paris last October. For its part, Loro Piana exhibited and marketed for the occasion a series of limited and exclusive candleholders, created in collaboration with jewelry designer Charlotte Chesnais.

Among the other events, Saint Laurent presented an exhibition organized by Madonna and creative director Anthony Vaccarello on the occasion of the reissue, by the Saint Laurent Rive Droite brand, of the iconic book SEX of the pop star, which had caused a sensation when it was released in 1992. The singer and the designer decided to show these images, shot by Steven Meisel, for the first time during a unique exhibition in an ephemeral gallery on the beach in Miami.

Alongside the big names, smaller brands also made the trip. Like Casablanca, which signed a capsule collection of clothing and accessories inspired by Art Deco with the multi-brand luxury retailer The Webster, a true institution in Miami. Another example is Victoria/Tomas designer Tomas Berzins, who set up at Moloko Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach to sell the Parisian label's latest Summer 2023 collection, as well as some iconic archival pieces.

Surfing on the event, Renzo Rosso president of the Italian fashion group OTB reopened, via an exclusive evening, after two years of restoration, the historic Pelican Hotel, built in 1948 in Miami Beach, which he had bought in 1990. While Prada brought to Miami its "Prada Extends" project with a series of live events reserved for VIPs, special customers and friends of the brand.
