Dr Martens opens standalone store in Berlin
British footwear label Dr Martens has opened its third standalone store in Germany in Berlin, following two earlier openings in Cologne and Dusseldorf. The move comes after the label decided to take over its own distribution in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and build a retail presence with several key openings.
The Berlin store did a soft opening at the end of October, and a grand opening is due to take place this Thursday 29 November.
The nearly 60-square-metre space is defined by an open space surrounded by bricks and concrete materials. Industrial lamps are combined with steel fixtures as an homage to the brand’s signature boot style, which was has been in production since 1960. English design studio OL3 was responsible for the store’s interior.
Meanwhile, an artwork by Berlin-based illustrator Benedikt Rugar, who is closely associated with the capital’s club scene, decorates the back wall of the checkout area.
Situated on Neue Schönhauser Straße in the Mitte district, close to the Weinmeisterstraße underground station, the brand has chosen a prime location for its Berlin store.
Popular cafes, restaurants and high-end shopping stores abound in the area, which has become a leading destination for an international, fashion-conscious clientele. The environment fits perfectly with Dr Martens’ own consumer base and product range, it said.
The Berlin opening is an important step in Dr Martens’ ambition to build a stronger retail presence in the DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland).
More standalone Dr Martens stores are scheduled to open in Germany next year, FashionNetwork.com can reveal. Their exact location is, however, not yet known.
