Bag label Susan Bijl to launch Etnomanie, debuts first raincoat collection

In September 2018, Dutch bag and accessories label Susan Bijl will be launching a raincoat collection, which will be the label’s first clothing collection.

The collection will be in collaboration with Etnomanie, an exhibition by Dutch stylist and curator Ellie Uyttenbroek, which was on view at the Rotterdam-based Nederlands Fotomuseum (Dutch Photography Museum) from 20 May 2018 until 27 August 2018.

The brand said that Etnomanie is a wordplay that captures the modern-life hysteria of globalization. In addition to raincoats, the collection will also consist of shopping bags and pouches, which are signature pieces of the Susan Bijl range.

“Etnomanie refers to the flourishing interaction and inspiration between different cultures. Style crossovers result in exciting Etnomanian fashion languages and identities,” the brand further explained in a press release.

Susan Bijl’s Etnomanie collection will be available in five colors, which are based on skin tones and are named after former Nobel Peace Prize winners: Wangari Maathai, Barack Obama, Malala Yousafzai, Liu Xiaobo and Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, plus the Etnomanie logo.

The Etnomanie raincoats will retail at €99,90; bags are priced between €18,90 for a small pouch and €34,90 for a large shopping bag. The Etnomanie and Susan Bijl collaboration will be available from 14 September at the Susan Bijl Flagship store in Rotterdam.

Susan Bijl is a graduate of the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. She launched her namesake label in 2003. The brand is available at its Flagship Store in Rotterdam as well as via its own web store. Additional points of sale include Dutch department store de Bijenkorf; Funkie House, Rotterdam; Claude, Yokohama, Japan; Tuchuzy Bondi, Sydney; and Rock 01, Barcelona. All Susan Bijl products are created with bluesign-certified Ripstop nylon.

Stylist and curator Ellie Uyttenbroek is known for Exactitudes, a groundbreaking creative project in which she researches and portrays cultural identities. In 2017, she created the traveling exposition Etnomanie, which was entirely made of manipulated ethno-historical images.
