Amazon opens tech centre in Manchester

Amazon has opened a new corporate office in Manchester, which will eventually be home to over 600 tech and non-tech employees, including software engineers, business development specialists and finance analysts.

Located in the city’s Hanover Building in the Northern Quarter, the 90,000 sq. ft. site spreads over six floors.

Amazon said it selected Manchester because of its reputation as a modern startup city. This will be particularly important as the e-tailer is planning to launch its AWS Startup Garage there, a new initiative designed to support startups as they develop their business.

“Manchester offers an incredible talent pool, a thriving hub of fast-growing UK tech start-ups and is a centre of academic and intellectual excellence,” said Doug Gurr, UK country manager at Amazon.

The AWS Startup Garage will be hosted in the new corporate office, and will aim to help local tech startups tackle technical and business challenges. Startups will be able to learn from each other and the AWS team, make connections and ultimately become an active part of the local startup community.

The startups will be from all industries, and while the current cohort doesn't include a fashion focused project, it could in the future.

Amazon has already begun advertising roles for the new office, which has been designed with sustainability principles in mind. Centrally monitored recycling streams will process waste, while lighting, heating and ventilation systems are demand-based systems allowing for a lean and efficient operation.

The new site expands Amazon’s presence in the North West, adding to fulfilment centres in Manchester Airport, Warrington and Bolton. The retail giant also operates a sortation centre and three delivery stations in the region.

Last year, Amazon also opened its first Clicks & Mortar store in St Mary’s, Gate, Manchester. The space enabled small online businesses working with Enterprise Nation to test physical retail for the first time.
