Vision 2017: Camouflage Update (Geraldine Wharry)

Published
Nov 4, 2016

Yi Ru Chen, SS17

The word camouflage is said to have originated from the Parisian slang term camoufler (meaning “to disguise”) after the French army began employing artists to paint their artillery and observation posts in the now ubiquitous pattern. In a 1917 Op-Ed in The New York Times pertaining to the relatively new practice of camouflaging oneself offered their own take stating “It is a wonderful opportunity, this game of hokus-pokus.”

Fast forward to 2016 and the cross triangulation of camouflage interpretations is stronger than ever between fashion and art. The current exhibition at London gallery West “The Vanishing Art of Camouflage” makes this its focal point.

This report echoes our recent "Military inspired" forecast. In analyzing the strongest foothold of Camouflage as a key print contender for future seasons, we focused on three directions:

  • Traditional camo
  •

  •

- Geo camo

  • Botanical prints
