Pantone NYFW Spring 18 trend report brings unexpected dramatic color combos

Published
Sep 6, 2017

Pantone's Spring 2018 trend report showcases twelve new seasonal colors and four classic colors from the runways. Key trends include nontraditional use of color for more dramatic self expression.

PantoneView Color Planner Spring/Summer 2018 - Pantone Color Institute

Pantone's top twelve Spring 2018 palette "encourages a sense of fun and playful release." Included are Lime Punch, a sharp citrus green, Cherry Tomato, an orangey red that conveys heat, and Arcadia, a retro teal green. Blueish purples and browns create "an air of complexity and distinctiveness" that is "ideal for some more unique and dramatic color mixing."

As spring brings a renewed sense of optimism in fashion, the colors reflected on the runway are more daring than past springs. Pantone calls the twelve spring fashion colors an opportunity for a "more multi-faceted color story that expands the opportunity for self-expression."

The Spring 2018 top twelve colors indicate the new consumer trend of playing with color year round without adhering to traditional color rules. Rich colors are juxtaposed with strong summer brights for playful new combinations.

In addition to seemingly breaking seasonal color guidelines, the colors also transcend traditional gender barriers. Pantone's key takeaway is that the new season offers a "freedom to explore and experiment with more color" without the limitations of "traditional color guidelines."

For Pantone's Spring 2018 Classic Color Palette, the report highlights four main basics that are to function as a foundational core for building spring looks. These four colors are navy blue, dove gray, off white and a neutral named Warm Sand.

Overall the themes expressed in the trend report are more diverse colors that support self-expression. Consumers can expect to see more dramatic color combinations that do not follow traditional color rules.
