London Fashion Week : Basso & Brooke et Betty Jackson

LONDON, Feb 12, 2008 (AFP) - Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Gaudi and Norman Foster, the masters of urban architecture, put their own indirect stamp on London Fashion Week Tuesday February 12th with their influence on the newest creations from Basso and Brooke for the 2008 fall-winter collection.

Already known for their fondness of technical experimentation, Brazilian Bruno Basso and Briton Chris Brooke digitised and edited urban landscape photographs to adorn their clothing designs, they said in a statement.

The resulting collection, however, more closely resembled a series of psychedelic impressions, with variations in colours reinforced by effects of curves in the cut of the clothing, while the models themselves were used to experiment with varying shapes and volumes.

Because the designer duo wanted to preserve their architectural theme throughout the cut and construction of their clothes, dress sleeves were created with a bulb-like effect resembling St. Basil's cathedral in Moscow, while skirts and dresses adhered to a Gehry-like style with perpendicular frills.

The pair also used differences in how a gown falls and its heaviness by using various types of cloth -- wool, silk, velvet, leather and jersey.

Somewhat less experimental was British designer Betty Jackson, who stayed true to her own style with large, loose clothing in colours that have been popular throughout London Fashion Week -- oil blue, mustard, vermilion red and pink.

Betty Jackson, who has presented her collections twice a year on the British capital's podiums for a quarter century, described her style as "easy, fabulous and gorgeous."

London Fashion Week is set to close Friday evening, but the highlight of the event is the return of Vivienne Westwood on Thursday evening, after an absence of nine years.
