Amazon elevates India head to Senior Vice President

Global e-commerce giant Amazon has elevated the India country manager Amit Agarwal to the role of Senior Vice President, making him a part of the company’s global team, according to a report in the Economic Times.

The promotion comes within a year of Agarwal’s inclusion in the S-Team (senior leadership team), who reports directly to chief executive officer and president Jeff Bezos. Agarwal was inducted to the S-Team in April 2016.

Agarwal will continue as the India head with the focus solely to topple Flipkart from the number one position. He will also have to deal with a new entrant in the form of Alibaba backed Paytm’s online marketplace.

Agarwal has been on a steady rise in the company ranks over the past 18 years he has spent in the company and was also a part of the much coveted technical advisor team, known as the Shadow Team of Bezos.

Amazon has pumped in Rs 7000 crore in its India operation over the last one year and has made a commitment of investing $5 billion to grow the e-commerce marketplace’s presence.
