Amazon Australia sheds light on first distribution centre location

Published

Ahead of its impending entry into the Australian market, Amazon has shed light on the location of its physical presence in Australia with a warehouse set to open in Dandenong South, Victoria.

The US e-commerce giant has posted advertisements for several management positions based in the Melbourne suburb, including site safety manager, area manager (front-line supervisors), operations manager, loss prevention manager (security), studio manager (product photography) and public relations manager.

The ads also alluded to manual labour positions stating “depending on the type of job, you will be required to engage in physical warehouse activities," according to local media reports.

The online retailer said previously it is looking for a fulfilment centre with floor space of up to 93,000 square metres.

“We are excited to bring thousands of new jobs to Australia, millions of dollars in additional investment, and to empower small Australian businesses through Amazon Marketplace,” a company statement read.

The Dandenong South area, some 30 kilometres south-east of Melbourne city, already houses distribution centres for major retailers such as Aldi.

Amazon confirmed in April it would indeed enter the Australian market, after months of circulating rumours.

In total, the Australian online retail market was worth A$21.65 billion in the 12 months to December 2016, according to the NAB Retail Index.
